AU (Athletes Unlimited) is such a short off-season opportunity compared to playing overseas. I think (and hope) we're going to see a real improvement from Mercedes Russell now that she's spent her full off-season overseas instead of AU.

I'm not sure how WNBL teams would feel about bringing back KB since she left the Adelaide Lightning partway through the season.

Europe is probably a better opportunity for development, there's a reason why most Aussie WNBA players spend their offseason in Europe and not the WNBL. Also better pay, though imports are usually the second and third best paid players on a WNBL team.

That being said, I could see her doing well on a WNBL team that makes the finals, or at least isn't one of the bottom two.

Sidenote, lol about Tianna's "retirement" - that's an import we'd love to have back in the WNBL

Wondering your opinion with the Aces waiving Beal and Jones. Obviously the team needs to make cuts but do we think it will make space for some of the rookies or could the Aces be considering bringing in other players with Parker leaving?

There are no other players available at this late hour except for maybe Tianna Hawkins. But I don't know if she's planning on playing this year. Everyone who you see on training camp rosters is pretty much everyone who could possibly play. But there are ways to grab a player from another team's training camp roster.

Aces are definitely planning to keep at least one of the players they drafted. If they keep both of them, I'd be surprised but not shocked. Becky doesn't mind playing without bench depth so she could have a young bench with a few rookies.

From the court to the sidelines, there will be a strong Australian flavour when the WNBA play-offs begin on Thursday September 14th Australian time. 

The top eight finishers in the WNBA regular season split into four best-of-three first-round series with the winners advancing to best-of-five semi-final fixtures. The final two will then do battle over five games for WNBA championship glory. 

The Seven Consulting Opals are well represented across playing and coaches ranks.

Cayla George’s Las Vegas Aces finished the regular season top of the ladder with a 34-6 record and now take on eight-seed Chicago featuring Alanna Smith and former Perth Lynx star Marina Mabrey.  

Opals head coach Sandy Brondello guided the New York Liberty (32-8) to second seed and they now play the Washington Mystics. Reigning Rachael Sporn medallist and Townsville Fire championship player Tianna Hawkins, who will return to the WNBL this season, is a prime mover for the Mystics. 

Opals assistant Paul Goriss is part of the coaching group at Atlanta Dream. The Dream, featuring new Perth WNBL import Aari McDonald and former Townsville player Monique Billings, face the Dallas Wings in a showdown between fourth and fifth-placed teams. New Southside Flyers import Jasmine Dickey is on the Wings roster. 

Tokyo Olympian Bec Allen will make her play-offs debut with Connecticut Sun, after crossing from the Liberty in the off-season, who play Minnesota Lynx. 

There’s a quartet of familiar faces in the Lynx line-up with Tiffany Mitchell, Lindsay Allen, Bridget Carleton and Rachel Banham all former WNBL imports. 

Seattle Storm (Sami Whitcomb, Ezi Magbegor, Jade Melbourne) and Indiana Fever (Kristy Wallace) didn’t reach the play-offs and Whitcomb, Melbourne and Wallace will now return to Australia ahead of WNBL pre-season with their respective teams Townsville, Canberra and Melbourne, while Magbegor will again play in Europe.

Did you know Red has been in hawkins for seven years? Yeah, they've been described as Defensive, but I suppose them being friend (family) driven outweighs the negative. I've also heard people say they remind them of icey cold eyes (after almost going blind) that analyse their surroundings carefully, fire due to their fiery personality that matches their red hair, a deer due to their somewhat cautious nature and approach around new places and people however, that could just be this weeks newest rumour. - [Myles, 23, They/She, BST]

Starting: WASH: Atkins, Dolson, Edwards, Samuelson, Vanloo (Sykes out with ankle injury, Austin injury rest?) CONN: Bonner, Carrington, Harris, Jones, Thomas

1st Quarter A few misses early, then Ariel gets a nice shot off over Breezy to open up our scoring. Edwards is starting today as Austin rests. Edwards has been so impressive thus far this season. The matchups are good between these starting lineups. Earl on Carrington, JVL v Harris, Edwards gets to test her chops against AT. 8-9 early The difference maker is going to be can we make 3s tonight in order to open up the whole court on O more than anything. If yes, we have a chance. If no? No chance. AT is May Player of the Month yeah guess what that doesn't make up for the MVP snub. Hines-Allen in, Edwards and her go 2-man getting multiple good chances on the possession that they can't convert, but it felt like a good sign to get offensive boards. Nelson-Ododa was a problem for us last matchup. JVL no look to Karlie for 3. Ambitious scoop overhead passes need to stop. So many turnovers from them all season. 10-2 run for the Sun. Edwards getting crowd support on her foul shots. Another multiple o-board possession and this time we convert. Much improved. Must continue through 40 minutes though. We grind back to 18-19 to end the quarter. CONN not yet in groove though.

2nd Quarter Great stop to start the quarter, excellent D. Unfortunately we turn it over via ambitious pass. Jade is left a lane and knows what to do. Gets a bonus too. Proud of Jade's D on Carrington. Game still within 1. O boards up to 7 with 6 min left in the half. Engstler getting some minutes here. Right now she and Edwards are responsible for the bigs which makes me nervous. Shot clock violation on us :( We have a very younnnnng (to the league) lineup in. A couple vets return and OOh great possession on O, creative trust-based, SUCCESSFUL. We tie it up at 30 and force a shot clock violation and Sun timeout. Yip! They come back from the break and we force another! We struggle to score but manage to end the half with a Stef 3 to pull ahead 33-32. A lead at half!

3rd Quarter Things looking physical early. A string of misses for DC. Two silly turns from the Sun save it from being a Connecticut run. Make that three. Connecticut clearly got told to body during the half time chat. Too many misses and Ty hits a three. 35-42 and we need time. Comig back Ty hits another. The lead is ten. Vanloo answers. Two horrible turnovers. in a row. We need an energy shift here. Karlie has a tough tough job tonight against Bonner. She has gotten some dumb whistles and lots of physcality. Bonner sits and she finally takes and makes a 3. 43-58. Terrible quarter on both ends of the floor for DC.

4th Quarter Hey Briann January :D It appears that we are forcing things instead of getting what is given. Shatori with a squeaky clean block. DC starting to lose hope and needs a mental reset. "Might see a movie later with Dustin." He said it without a second thought, handing over another sundae. The kids thanked him, turning away, something you were grateful for. You couldn't hide the disappointed look. Did he really forget? Neither of you ever made a huge deal about your birthdays, you never expected anything grand or expensive, but you'd always done something. For his you'd made a cake and spent the day watching movies. You were supposed to go to an amusement park just outside of Hawkins, but the rain ruined your plans. Luckily, he didn't mind, and it turned out to be a better day than you expected. You were hoping he'd do something similar, even a card and a balloon would have been okay. You were both working pretty late, and had school tomorrow. Of all the people in the world, you just didn't think he'd be the one to forget.

"Oh." Steve wasn't an idiot. At least, not all the time. He knew what today was, had it marked on his calendar for months, and started planning weeks ago. It was the kids idea to pretend to forget, not to bring it up or anything. That would make the surprise even better. He never wanted to hurt you though. Hearing the drop in your voice, seeing the look on your face, made him instantly regret it. He wanted to tell you all about the party the kids were setting up as you spoke. About the balloons that took up all the room in his car. About the cake with dozens of candles, an inside joke you'd developed years ago and never let go of. About the banner he made all by himself that was crooked, he hoped, in an endearing way. But he didn't want to ruin it, so he let it go, thanking another customer. It would be worth it just to see the look of shock and joy on your face.
